happy mother's day!

happy mother's day! here's the progress of my (as usual) late gift to my mother. she's the sweetest soul on the planet packed into a five-foot-tall, ninety-five pound package, and she sure as hell loves her wine!

i don't think it's quite necessary to mention alphonse mucha as inspiration - a lady with flowing hair in a faux-grecian tunic? c'mon.

click through for bigger images! the finished piece will be posted shortly. hopefully.

riddles

our last assignment for our thesis class was on riddles...pick one, illustrate the question and the answer.
virtually received no feedback from my instructor, except that she didn't realize it was the Sphinx, some would be appreciated.

(riddle: what creature has one voice, stands on four legs in the morning, two legs in the day, and three in the evening?)

(answer: man)

ink and brush and a little white acrylic. first is 11" x 14", second is 9" x 12" though you certainly can't tell here.

internet troubles

I've decided that I'm officially forsaking deviantart - the softcore porn and myspace photos have finally gotten to me. I'm also going to stop posting finished pieces on Facebook, as they can do whatever they want with whatever you put on there...and I didn't think about the ramifications of that until recently. This blog will be where I post everything from now on, so please, pass the link around if you're interested.

brides' bedroom

i think i'm crazy. please click it to see it blown up.

back wall of brides' bedroom. the tapestry is a medieval one called "the sense of sight" and is part of the 'unicorn tapestries' series. unicorns were symbols of virginity and purity, only able to be approached by a young virgin maiden. here, the maiden makes the unicorn aware of itself by showing its reflection in a mirror. the thing above the tapestry is a window, the white will be cut out to allow light in.

junior thesis

i've been absent but productive. most of the posts for the next couple of months will be of the progress of my junior thesis.

we were given a theme last august, "poisoned ap
ples and smoking lamps," which centers around the dark underpinnings of original fairy tales. the stories were told as warnings against pride, dishonesty, foolhardiness, cowardice, and the like. often, they included morals, promoting bravery, honesty, kindness, and hard work. i chose the story of 'fitcher's bird,' in which the youngest sister of three saves her older sisters from a wicked man. it's a variation of the story of 'bluebeard.'

i placed 'fitcher's bird' in the 20s, made the youngest sister into a wily flapper, and changed a few plot details. the sisters are bound, beat up, and terrified but intact when
the youngest finds them. instead of dressing up as a bird to trick fitcher, she puts on an evening gown covered in feathers, and poisons his drink. the sisters then cover the house in lamp oil, lock the doors, and burn it down.

here are the progress photos thus far! i'll add more t
onight, plus structural drawings showing the finished concept.

also note, these will eventually be lit with fai
ry lights, so the interior of the house will be visible.

everything together for scale^

heh. totoro in the corner.

next time, it won't be quite so much at once. and less gore from here on in.
