junior thesis
i've been absent but productive. most of the posts for the next couple of months will be of the progress of my junior thesis.
we were given a theme last august, "poisoned apples and smoking lamps," which centers around the dark underpinnings of original fairy tales. the stories were told as warnings against pride, dishonesty, foolhardiness, cowardice, and the like. often, they included morals, promoting bravery, honesty, kindness, and hard work. i chose the story of 'fitcher's bird,' in which the youngest sister of three saves her older sisters from a wicked man. it's a variation of the story of 'bluebeard.'
i placed 'fitcher's bird' in the 20s, made the youngest sister into a wily flapper, and changed a few plot details. the sisters are bound, beat up, and terrified but intact when the youngest finds them. instead of dressing up as a bird to trick fitcher, she puts on an evening gown covered in feathers, and poisons his drink. the sisters then cover the house in lamp oil, lock the doors, and burn it down.
here are the progress photos thus far! i'll add more tonight, plus structural drawings showing the finished concept.
also note, these will eventually be lit with fairy lights, so the interior of the house will be visible.
